Custom Decks

Custom Decks Built Around How You Live

A great deck should do more than look good in photos. It should work for how you entertain, where you relax, how people move between the house and yard, and what you may want to add in the future. MH Carpentry builds custom wood and composite decks throughout Orangeville, Mono and surrounding communities with careful attention to structure, functionality and finish.

Wood or Composite?

Pressure-Treated Wood

A traditional, cost-conscious option with a natural appearance. Wood requires periodic cleaning, staining or refinishing, but with proper maintenance it can provide years of service.

Composite Decking

A higher upfront investment with less ongoing maintenance and a more consistent finished appearance. Different product lines vary in colour, texture, heat retention, durability and warranty, so we help clients compare the options rather than simply choosing a brand.

Not sure which is right? We can compare upfront considerations, appearance and long-term maintenance during the planning stage.

Built for How You Will Actually Use It

  • Where will the barbecue go?
  • Do you need room for a dining table?
  • Where will you sit for morning coffee?
  • Where does the sun hit throughout the day?
  • How will guests move through the space?
  • Where should stairs land?
  • Is a pergola, gazebo or hot tub planned later?
  • Should additional blocking be added now for future features?

Making these decisions during design is much easier than realizing after construction that the space does not work the way you expected.

Structure First

The finished decking is only as good as the structure underneath it. MH Carpentry generally prefers to take responsibility for the complete deck rather than install premium materials over framing we cannot confidently stand behind. Existing footings may occasionally be reusable if their condition, location and construction are appropriate, but that is evaluated case by case.

What a Deck Project Can Include

  • Existing deck demolition and disposal
  • Layout and design
  • Excavation and footings
  • Structural framing
  • Wood or composite decking
  • Stairs and railings
  • Privacy features
  • Pergola integration
  • Future blocking
  • Permit coordination where required
  • Final walkthrough
  • Project-specific maintenance guidance

Does My Deck Need a Permit?

Permit requirements depend on factors such as height, size, attachment to the home and municipality. When a permit is required, MH Carpentry strongly recommends completing the project through the proper municipal process. We can assist with drawings within our scope, paperwork, permit coordination and inspections where applicable.

How Long Does a Deck Take?

Many custom deck builds can be completed within roughly one to three weeks once construction begins, depending on size, complexity, weather, excavation conditions, materials and inspection schedule. A realistic timeline is established once the project scope and site conditions are understood.

Deck FAQ

Can you build over my existing deck frame?

Generally no. Existing framing must be evaluated before MH Carpentry is willing to take responsibility for the finished project.

Can I supply my own decking?

Generally, MH Carpentry supplies project materials so we can control product quality, quantities, returns, compatibility and responsibility if an ordering issue occurs.

Do you remove the old deck?

Yes. Demolition and disposal can be incorporated into the project.

Can I add a pergola or gazebo later?

Often, but tell us during design. Additional blocking or structural preparation may be easier to install before the deck is finished.

Do you build decks in winter?

Some exterior work can continue seasonally, but frozen ground, concrete requirements, snow and manufacturer requirements can affect construction.

How do I maintain the deck afterward?

Qualifying projects receive project-specific maintenance information covering the actual materials, fasteners, dimensions and recommended care.
