Start With What the Building Needs to Do

  • Workshop or storage?
  • Heated or unheated?
  • Vehicle or equipment access?
  • Electrical requirements?
  • Workbench/tool locations?
  • Overhead door size?
  • Windows/natural light?
  • Loft or overhead storage?
  • Future equipment requiring additional structure or electrical capacity?
  • Could the space eventually be used differently?

A workshop designed around its intended use will serve you much better than a generic building that simply fits on the lot.

Does My Workshop Need a Permit?

Many accessory buildings require municipal approval depending on size, height, location and intended use. Zoning can also affect what is possible. Setbacks, lot coverage, conservation requirements and property-specific restrictions may influence the design before construction begins. MH Carpentry can help coordinate the permit process, including drawings within our scope, paperwork, municipal submissions and inspection scheduling. Where architectural or engineering services are required, those professionals are brought into the project separately.

Design, Engineering & Drawings

MH Carpentry can help develop practical layouts and construction concepts for appropriate projects. Larger or more complex accessory buildings may require architectural or engineering input for structural elements, foundations or other components. When that is required, we coordinate with the appropriate professionals rather than working beyond our scope.

Site Access Can Change the Construction Plan

A good design also has to be buildable on the property. Before construction, we consider how excavation equipment, concrete, lumber, trusses and other materials will reach the building area. Narrow access, septic systems, slopes, landscaping, overhead utilities and limited driveway space can all affect the construction plan.

More Than Framing

A finished accessory building involves much more than standing walls. Depending on the project, MH Carpentry can coordinate or complete structural framing, roof systems, exterior sheathing, roofing, siding and trim, windows and doors, insulation, vapour control, interior construction, garage-door openings and related finishing work. The goal is to think about the building as a complete system rather than a collection of separate tasks.

Coordinating the Right Trades

Workshops commonly require electrical service, lighting, receptacles, heating or other specialized work. Where additional trades are required, MH Carpentry works with trusted subcontractors and trade partners selected for their workmanship and professionalism. Ben remains the client's primary point of contact and oversees the project experience from start to finish.

Workshop FAQ

How large can I build?

That depends on zoning, setbacks, lot coverage, height limits and property-specific restrictions.

Do you handle permits?

Yes, for many typical accessory-building projects. The exact process depends on municipality and scope.

Will I need an engineer?

Some projects do. Structural components, foundations and unusual designs may require professional engineering.

Can you coordinate electrical work?

Yes. Appropriate qualified trades can be coordinated as part of the project.

Can the workshop be heated and insulated?

Yes, depending on design and applicable requirements. Insulation, vapour control, heating and electrical needs should be considered early.

How long does a workshop take?

The timeline depends on permitting, site work, complexity, material availability and inspections. Once the project is defined, MH Carpentry provides a realistic project-specific schedule.

Can you build on an existing slab or foundation?

Potentially, but the existing foundation must be evaluated for condition, dimensions and suitability.

Can I supply materials?

Generally no. MH Carpentry prefers to manage material specification, ordering, compatibility, returns and accountability.
